Demonstrators shouted “Down with [Russian President Vladimir] Putin!,” “Russia without Putin!” and “Putin is a thief!”

Navalny, leader of the liberal opposition, took part in an unsanctioned rally in Moscow before he was detained.

“I’m happy that so many people came out [onto the streets] from the east [of the country] to Moscow,” Navalny said before his arrest, according to Reuters.

Navalny urged people to continue on with the rallies after his detention.

“Guys, I’m fine. No need to fight to get me out. Walk along Tverskaya [Moscow main street]. Our topic of the day is the fight against corruption,” Navalny said, according to BBC.

Navalny orchestrated the protests after releasing a report where he accuses Medvedev of corruption. Medvedev’s spokeswoman called the accusations “propagandistic attacks,” according to BBC.
